Primary osteoporosis

Abstract
Preview By the fourth decade of life, the peak bone mass has been reached and a slow loss of both cancellous and cortical bone begins. Osteoporosis affects women more severely than men because, after menopause, women experience an accelerated loss of cancellous bone in addition to the slow loss. Dr Allen explains bone remodeling and how to examine patients for the reduced bone-mineral density that indicates osteoporosis. Preventive methods and therapy, both established and experimental, are summarized.
