Abstract
A discussion is given of the effect on telescopic performance of an atmosphere which introduces a phase disturbance across the incident beam. The transfer functions for stationary and uniformly moving disturbances are deduced. Numerical examples are given for the case of a sinusoidal disturbance, and confirmatory experimental evidence is described. Keywords
