Abstract
In this issue of Clinical Infectious Diseases, Nijssen et al. [1] describe the spread in 2 intensive care units (ICUs) of Enterobacteriaceae strains that carried integrons coding for reduced susceptibility to β-lactams and other antibiotics commonly used in treating critically ill patients. The authors describe acquisition of integron-carrying Enterobacteriaceae, cross-transmission of such organisms, and inter- and intraspecies transfer of integrons. The report is important because it demonstrates the need for systematic epidemiological studies of this type of antibiotic resistance and the need for its containment.
