Abstract
This chapter starts by defining what is meant by “survivor”. The “survivor” is one who has come into contact with death in some bodily or psychic fashion yet he or she has remained alive. The holocausts of the twentieth century have thrust the survivor ethos into a special prominence. It has imposed upon us a series of immersions into death which mark our existence. The key to the survivor experience is the imprint of death. The chapter argues that the death anxiety of the survivor is concerned not just with dying itself but premature death and the fear of an life unfulfilled.
