M.D.A.: A Multi-Disciplinary Approach for Teacher Effectiveness Training in Drug Education

Abstract
Teachers are generally not prepared to teach about substance abuse in an effective manner. Yet the need for such educational programming has never been needed more. Oftentimes school administrators and teachers alike are reticent to admit their lack of basic preparation. An in-service program is proposed in order to integrate the variety of disciplines involved with such training. Hence, among others, a multi-disciplinary approach is recommended which includes the principles of psychology, sociology, health science, and communications. Additionally it is recommended that all persons involved in public education be familiar with the legal aspects of substance abuse. Education for the prevention, control and reduction of substance abuse is a shared responsibility between home, school and community.
