Abstract
Modifications are described which were made to the cathode assembly of a conventional CRT electron gun in order to reduce outgassing, gas reactions, and to improve reliability. Modifications involved replacement of the original cathode assembly with a thoria coated iridium wire filament. This filament permits maintainance of gun currents of more than 5×10−5 A, even in the presence of reactive environments. Preliminary modification using a lanthanum hexaboride coated rhenium ribbon filament indicated poisoning in reactive environments. Keywords
