Abstract
The cuticular composition of Heliothis virescens (F.) larvae differed between resistant larvae which exhibited a slow DDT penetration and susceptible larvae which exhibited a rapid penetration. Protein and lipid content were greater in the cuticle of resistant larvae. Results of micro-Kjeldahl studies indicated that more of the total nitrogen remained in the residue after urea extraction, which fact suggested a greater degree of sclerotization in the resistant cuticle. In other experiments, dietary levels of ascorbic acid influenced the resistance level and degree of sclerotization in H. virescens larvae. The role of ascorbic acid in sclerotization and its possible influence on resistance is discussed. Keywords
