Abstract
A cornerstone of William Osler's approach to medical education was to learn by active participation in patient care. Students learnt most by being taught in outpatient clinics and on ward rounds. British postgraduate medical education was based on this philosophy. Nowadays undergraduate and postgraduate medical education is in a state of turmoil—both the curriculum and the teaching and learning methods are being criticised.
