Abstract
The process of division in somatic nuclei of Rhizopus nigricans and Phycomyces blakesleeanus was studied with the aid of an acetoorcein stain - fixative technique. The nuclei in the vegetative hyphae of these fungi were found to divide by conventional mitosis. Chromosomes were counted and in Rhizopus nigricans, n = 16. In Phycomyces blakesleeanus, n = 14. Other proposed modes of nuclear division in the fungi are discussed in relation to these findings.
