Abstract
The theory of Vashishta and Singwi for the dielectric response function is examined. It is shown that in the limit of long wavelength and zero frequency this theory gives the same result as that of Kohn and Sham. The coefficient in the lowest-order gradient expansion for the exchange and correlation energy has been evaluated and compared with the results of others. Keywords
