Mitotic Activity of Mast Cells

Abstract
Mitotic activity occurs in adult mast cells of the mesentery of rats after 7 daily moderate (100 [mu]g) intraperitoneal doses of the histamine liberator, compound 48/80. After the same number of longer doses (500 to 1000 ug) which cause disintegration of mesenteric mast cells, mitoses are found in mast cells of subcutaneous tissue. Replacement of cells after disintegration appears to be by heteroplastic differentiation of lymphocytes or undifferentiated mesenchymal cells, or both.
