Abstract
It is found that the contributions of both nonlocality in the pseudopotential and exchange correlation in the screening reduce the cutoff radius of the strong screened Coulomb repulsion between ions in metals, thus revealing extra oscillations at short range in the effective interionic interaction. This analysis of the situation resolves some previous puzzles, and lends support to arguments about structural stability based on rearrangements of near neighbors. Keywords
