Abstract
Application of continuous positive pressure to the airway has proved to be a practical way of increasing arterial oxygenation in newborns with respiratory distress syndrome. Even among the smallest prematures, the technique makes survival possible for a majority until the lungs can produce adequate amounts of surface active material. The relatively simple equipment is described and the stages of treatment detailed. Keywords
