Abstract
Relationships diagnostic of Mn deficiency in Hordeum vulgare cv. Galleon were examined in growth chamber and field experiments by studying the effects of Mn supply on plant growth and on photosynthetic activity and Mn concentrations in young leaves and whole shoots. A critical Mn concentration in youngest emerged leaf blades of c.12 μg/g was diagnostic of reduced dry matter production. A more sensitive criterion of c.14 μg/g was associated with enhanced chlorophyll ‘a’ fluorescence as a measure of photo‐synthetic dysfunction. The critical Mn concentrations were similar in both growth chamber and field grown plants. The diagnostic criteria for Mn deficiency in a range of plant species are compared. Keywords
