Coupled Librations in the Motions of Asteroids Near the 2 : 1 Resonance

Abstract

Eight asteroids near the 2 : 1 resonance with Jupiter librate alternately in the secular and the commensurable modes over a time scale of thousands of years. An analytical theory is presented that explains this remarkable behaviour as a coupling between the two modes of libration.
