Abstract
Volunteering is viewed as being beneficial for the elderly because it can provide a means of acquiring substitutes for work and family roles. This study questions whether role loss significantly influences volunteering; the findings suggest that other social characteristics, such as socioeconomic status and gender, have a greater influence on volunteer patterns of the elderly. Keywords
