Closing Materials Research Structural Design Cycle

Abstract
A capability is described for the simultaneous optimization of material and structural design. This capability is based upon the materials evaluation function concept. It draws upon existing methods of analysis, structural synthesis, numerical analysis and mathematical programming. The capability is applied to the optimization of thermostructural, anisotropic composite plates subjected to complex loading environment. Results are presented to demonstrate the feasibility and importance of the simultaneous material and structural design optimization, and the closing of the loop in the Materials-Research Structural-Design Cycle.
