Abstract
The article discusses the increasing disintegration of the traditional agricultural and village structure in Finland owing to changes in the agricultural forces of production and in the relationship between industry and agriculture. The research project Village Study 76 and the 1300 village committees created in connection with the project are presented and evaluated as to their capacity to generate a new form of community in the countryside based on the activity and knowledge of the villagers themselves.
