Abstract
Abstract: Skjelfjord, V. J. 1987. Phonemic Segmentation. An Important Subskill in Learning to Read: I. Scandinavian Journal of Educational Research 31, 41‐58. Five subskills in learning to read are identified, their place in the methods of teaching reading and their relations to each other are discussed; it is concluded that phonemic segmentation must be the most important and the most difficult task in learning to read. A program of research on teaching phonemic segmentation is described, data are presented and conclusions as to the character of phonemic segmentation skill and the children's errors are discussed. Keywords
