Abstract
The metaphysical character of psychological memory research that originated with Ebbinghaus is pointed out. This research emphasizes isolated, static elements and quantitative relationships; it often implies the concept of a permanent memory. In contrast, a dialectical approach focuses on development of memory through contradictions which lead to qualitative changes. Both the process of remembering and research on memory take place in a sociohistorical context. Some relations of metaphysical memory research to ideology and technology are discussed.
