Abstract
Nuclear rotational states are calculated in terms of a three-dimensional extension of the cranking model. A simple two-level model that allows for an exact solution is employed in the analysis. Various ways to define principal axes of the rotating nucleus are discussed. The minimal energy of the system corresponds to stationary rotational motion around a principal axis. Keywords
