Observations on a Stochastic Model for Quantal Assay Data

Abstract
Diggle and Gratton (1984, Journal of the Royal Statistical Society, Series B 46, 193-227) extended stochastic model proposed by Puri and Senturia (1972, in Proceedings of the 6th Berkeley Symposium on Mathematical Statistics 4, 231-247) to describe quantal assay data incorporating time to response. We fit both models to real and simulated sets of data, and conclude that for data sets of sizes likely to be encountered in practice an essential parameter cannot be precisely estimated. In many cases the models will be overparameterised. General conclusions are drawn regarding the advantages and disadvantages of mechanistic models.
