To the Editor: In last week's issue of the Journal, Graze et al.1 reported the results of a screening program for the early detection of familial medullary thyroid carcinoma. Since the submission of that manuscript, we have had the opportunity to study the immunohistochemical localization of carcinoembryonic antigen in thyroid glands of patients reported in that series, as well as in additional patients with familial and nonfamilial medullary thyroid carcinoma, and wish to summarize the results of these studies.Previously reported investigations from our group,2 as well as those of Ishikawa and Hamada3 and Calmettes et al.,4 have described markedly . . .
