Abstract
Nineteen grandparent couples with no divorced children and 18 with at least one divorced child were interviewed about their relationships with their children, in-law children, and grandchildren. Neither group was well informed about their children's marriages. Following divorce, whether own child or in-law child was awarded custody of the grandchildren was found to affect the likelihood of maintaining contact with former in-law children, as well as the grandparental style adopted and relationships with grandchildren. Conceptualizing grandparenthood in future research as a process that occurs within the parameters of kinship systems is suggested. Keywords
