Abstract
The hexokinase of P. putrefaciens phosphorylates glucose and glucosamine at low substrate concns. Fructose, mannose, and a no. of other carbohydrates do not serve as substrates under these conditions. The enzyme has a low affinity for fructose, the latter serving as a poor substrate at high concns. Using prepns. devoid of phosphoglucomutase activity, the initial product of glucose phosphorylation was identified as glucose-6-phosphate.Keywords
