REGENERATION OF BUDS IN BOTRYLLUS

Abstract
In order to determine whether the size of the zooid in the colonial ascidian, Botryllus schlosseri, depends directly upon the number of cells initially present in the early bud, approximately half the cells of buds in the hemisphere stage were destroyed with a steel needle. No significant difference was found between the length of the zooids which formed from these damaged buds and the length of control zooids. Buds at all stages showed remarkable regenerative capacity. Degeneration of the adult zooids, which normally occurs when the buds become functional, occurred even if all buds were removed.
