Abstract
At diakinesis, a closed chain of 14 chromosomes is found in O. pratincola strain E, strain C, and mut. formosa. At heterotypic metaphase, the spindle fibers attach themselves to the chromosomes in such a way that alternate chromosomes pass to the same pole, thus producing a characteristic zigzag arrangement. Strain M (formosa X strain C) shows a closed chain of 12 chromosomes, with a ring of 2 attached to it. The ring of 2 chromosomes breaks from the closed chain of 12 at heterotypic metaphase and the 2 chromosomes of the pair pass to different poles. This pair of chromosomes is significant of the genetic behavior of strain M. The chromosomes are probably homologous and carry the genes for the flat leaf and revolute leaf, and their segregation and recombination in the breeding of strain M give the simple Mendelian ratio. The behavior of the chromosomes at meiosis in strain E and strain C is in accord with the genetical findings. This publication has 5 references indexed in Scilit:
