Abstract
Recently, acoustic emission and strain gage and laser displacement gage monitoring technology have been successfully applied to the nondestructive evaluation of several lift bridges. The applications cover a wide range of problems ranging from machinery diagnostics to crack characterization. This research is being sponsored by Northwestern University’s Infrastructure Technology Institute and the states of Wisconsin and Oregon. This paper will discuss test procedures and results on two of these bridges. One of the bridges is a rolling bascule type while the other is a vertical lift bridge. The technology was used to assess the functionality of the segmental casting attachments on the rolling bascule structure and to confirm fatigue crack growth in the trunnion shaft of the vertical lift bridge. Keywords
