Abstract
Electron momentum distributions have been determined from the measured Compton profiles of polycrystallino samples of lithium, disordered Li0·3-Mg0·3, and magnesium. In all three cases the band-electron momentum distributions exhibit a discontinuity at the free-electron value of the Fermi momentum and a high-momentum tail above the discontinuity attributable mainly to band-electron correlation. The band-electron momentum distribution becomes progressively less free-electron-like in going from Li to Li0·5Mg0·3 to Mg, with Mg exhibiting some p-electron-like character. Keywords
