THE EFFECT OF ANTICONVULSANT DRUGS ON RECOVERY OF FUNCTION FOLLOWING CEREBRAL CORTICAL LESIONS

Abstract
In previous expts. it had been observed that cortical stimulants increase both rate and amt. of recovery of cortical motor function of Macaca mulatta deprived of areas 4 and 6 of one hemisphere. The effects of sedatives were therefore tried under the same exptl. conditions. Phenobarbital in doses which had no observable clinical effect produced marked slowing in rate of recovery of motor function and eventual retardation in performance. Dilantin alone had no such retarding effect but, combined with Doryl, it inhibited or prevented the enhanced recovery rate produced by Doryl alone. Electroencephalograms were uninfluenced by either Doryl or Dilantin in these exptl. conditions. Phenobarbital in doses of approx. 40 mg./kg. caused significant changes in EEG.This publication has 6 references indexed in Scilit:
