Abstract
Summary The spatial relations system connecting the body and the external world, and determining their mutual specificity and coherence, results from an ontogenetic construction based on the motor activity of the subject. The head supremacy in this type of elaboration and in the visuo-motor readaptation of an adult confronted with a prismatic distorsion of his visual space, led us to consider the organization of the relations between the body segments. We distorted artificially the relations between the visual space and the body in order to see in which way each arm segment becomes adapted in relation to the others. The hypothesis of a hierarchical organization of motor space, revealing itself by a generalization of the adaptation of the arm to spatial distorsion only in a proximo-distal direction, has been generally confirmed. We tried to discuss these results in relation to the role of motor activity involved in the structuration of space. Keywords
