Observations on the labium of Corixidae (Hemiptera)

Abstract
The structure of the dorsal wall of the labium in the corixid Cenocorixa bifida is described. This area has an extremely thin cuticle, bears numerous sense organs, and has an enlarged and elaborate epidermis beneath the cuticle. The area becomes impregnated with silver when insects are placed in a 0.2% solution of silver nitrate, and this silver is shown to be located in the layers of the cuticle and in the underlying epidermis. It is shown, by autoradiographic techniques, that the area will take up 22Na when the insects are placed in labelled media. An association with ionic regulation is suggested.
