Observations on Antiviral Activity of Viscosin.

Abstract
Viscosin, an antibiotic produced by Pseudomonas viscosa. is strikingly specific in its antibiotic properties. Antibiotic activity was limited to the mycobacteria, infectious bronchitis virus of chickens and the influenza viruses. The most outstanding characteristic of viscosin was its protective effect on chicken embryos subsequently infected with infectious bronchitis virus. Subinhibitory amts. of interfering material (heated virus) in the viral inoculum enhanced the suppressive effect of inhibitory amounts of viscosin injd. 1 hr. after infection in eggs. The suppressive effect of viscosin on the progress of infection with influenza A virus in mice was detectable but minimal.[long dash].
