The reduction of methylene blue in milk

Abstract
Fresh milk re-duced methylene blue in 1/2 hr. in the presence of sun-light at 37[degree] while there was no decoloration within 7 hrs. in the dark. The reaction was just as rapid in milk heated at 100[degree] for 1/2 hr. Separated milk did not decolorize the methylene blue within 7 hrs. in the sunlight. The activity was restored by Na oleate but not by Na palminate. The sunlight may, perhaps, catalize an oxidation-reduction reaction in which unsaturated fats are oxidized and methylene blue is reduced.
