On the Mechanism of Action of Magnesium Sulphate upon the Gallbladder

Abstract
The oral administration of MgSO4 in man causes an increase in the cholecysto-kinetic activity of the urine. In the monkey and in the guinea-pig, irrigation of the duodenum with MgSO4 causes the appearance of a substance in the blood, which contracts the gallbladder of the donor animal and also the isolated guinea-pig gallbladder bathed by the donor blood. The substance responsible for the cholecystokinetic activity in urine and blood is probably cholecystokinin.
