Abstract
Male adult rats (37) divided into 6 groups were treated as follows: (a) controls; (b) Lugol''s solution (2.5 mg I daily for 15 days; (c) thyroidectomy; (d) thyroidectomy + Lugol''s solution; (e) thiourea (10-20 mg daily for one month), and (f) thiourea + Lugol''s solution. Blood from each group was pooled and the thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) isolated was injected into guinea pigs for assay by the thyroid cytological coefficient method. Both thyroidectomy and thiourea increased circulating TSH, whereas I decreased it when given to normal and thyroidectomized animals, or to those which had received thiourea. The affinity of pituitary thyrotroph cells for aldehyde fuchsin varied in-versely with the TSH concentration in the blood. Keywords
