Abstract
The equilibrium condition of a general dislocation loop in an isotropic medium is deduced by a variational procedure. It is found that the forces due to the external and self‐stress (defined by Brown [5]) must cancel each other at any line element of the loop. This leads to a formula giving the line tension in terms of line integrals. It is shown, that the generally accepted formula T = E + d2E/dϑ2 is only applicable in the limiting case of nearly straight dislocations. Keywords
