Abstract
The article presents the results of a survey conducted among presidents of small manufacturing firms in Virginia about problems facing their firms. The questionnaire was mailed to 300 companies, 92 of which were returned. The results found that most of the presidents think that superior subordinate relations is the single most important problem facing their firm. The respondents cited poor employee motivation and training as contributing factors to poor quality control and faulty design problems. According to the survey, presidents also expressed frustration on their failure to find ways to effectively manage their companies within the legal framework of their union contracts. Keywords
