Abstract
By the use of a bacterium which exhibits an extreme resistance to As(V), an efficient microbial sensor for biological oxygen demand (BOD) was developed. A good lineality was obtained up to 90mg L-1 of BOD (glucose + glutamic acid standard). The response of the sensor was almost unchanged in the presence of up to 5, 000 mg L-1 of As(V). A good correlation was obtained between BOD values assayed by the sensor method and those determined by JIS method (5-day method). The current output of the microbial sensor was almost unchanged over 30 days, when the sensor was kept at 7°C in storage and the assay by using this was carried out at 30°C every 3 or 4 days. Keywords
