Abstract
Available paleontological data show no relationship between environmental stress (proximity to the ancient shoreline) and duration of marine benthic macroinvertebrate genera in the Paleozoic. This is contrary to inferences from fossil community lineages, but in accord with genetic and physiological data on living taxa. Keywords
