Streptomycin biosynthesis in Streptomyces griseus II. Adjacent genomic location of biosynthetic genes and one of two streptomycin resistance genes

Abstract
Streptomyces griseus genomic DNA codes for two different streptomycin phosphotransferases. Both genes confer streptomycin resistance to their host. A cloned DNA fragment containing one of the two resistance determinants overlaps with another cloned segment of S. griseus genomic DNA, complementing 1 out of 3 classes of streptomycin-idiotrophic mutants. This demonstrates physical linkage of resistance and biosynthetic genes involved in streptomycin biogenesis in the genome of S. griseus.
