Abstract
The grounding of the individualistic self-care-behavior approach to health promotion in classical liberal political theory is made explicit by uncovering the correspondence between the assumptions of the two. Questions are raised about whether the problems attributed to liberal theory are reflected in the results obtained with individualistic health promotion. It is suggested that for nurses to engage in socially responsible health promotion, they may need to reconceptualize health promotion using a feminist perspective. Keywords
