Interventions Aimed at Decreasing Obesity in Children Younger Than 2 Years

Abstract
The rate of obesity among children has reached epidemic proportions, with more than 25% of preschool children now classified as overweight or obese.1 Children who are overweight during the preschool years are more than 5 times as likely to be overweight adolescents,2 and a growing body of evidence indicates that weight status of young infants is associated with obesity or metabolic risk factors later in life.3-10 Recent studies revealed that weight gain in a child's first year of life11 and even weight status at age 6 months12 have implications for future obesity status and the development of insulin resistance and other cardiovascular risk factors.
