Impact of stimulated Brillouin scattering on fibre Raman amplifiers

Abstract
The occurrence of stimulated Brillouin scattering is shown to determine a saturation of the Raman gain and of the amplified spontaneous Raman scattered power at lower levels. Reducing the effective core area to potentially increase the Raman gain has a negligible effect above a given value of the amplifier length, whereas for small amplifier lengths it always determines a reduction of the on/off ratio.
