Gaultheriahybrids at Pureora

Abstract
Four populations of Gaultheria species and hybrids at Pureoora were sampled and found to consist of G. antipoda, G. paniculata, and hybrids between these species. Six character, were used to separate the species, and by allocating to each plant a numerical value for each character, it was possible to determine the variability of the characters and the affinities of the putative hybrids. The results showed that both species are slightly introgressed, although intermediate hybrids form only a relatively small proportion of the populations. From this, it was assumed either that the species seldom cross, or that there is some genetical barrier to complete inter fertility between them. The structure of the population is in part related to the habitat.
