L-Canavanine Effects on Growth and Development of Four Species of Muscidae1

Abstract
Larvae of the house fly, face fly, horn fly, and stable fly were reared in media containing various concentrations of L-canavanine. Response in order of decreasing sensitivity was the stable fly, face fly, horn fly, and house fly. Only 18% house fly mortality was obtained from 800 ppm canavanine, a level which killed at least 70% of the other 3 species. Horn fly and face fly showed additional delayed concentration-dependent effects expressed as smaller pupal size, some degree of pupal deformation, and pupal mortality.
