Abstract
Strong J. S. (1983) Regional variations in industrial performance, Reg. Studies 17, 429–444. Regional differences in cycle experience are wider than would be expected on the basis of industrial composition alone. Spatial variations in economic performance within four industries are examined and found to be of considerable magnitude and persistence. Localized demand and productivity differentials are shown to be important determinants of these variations, particularly for mature industries. The interaction between regional and industrial distributions is shown to have important implications for sectoral policies and for regionally-oriented stabilization policy.
