Computer-Managed Instruction: State of the Art

Abstract
This article summarizes the findings of a report which addressed the current status of systems of computer-managed instruction (CMI). Five CMI systems are reviewed with respect to characteristics including curricular support capability, extent of implementation, hardware/software requirements, and evaluative measures. Brief descriptions of 17 other CMI systems also are presented. It is the general conclusion of the study that CMI does appear to offer potential as a management device but little conclusive evidence exists concerning cost-effectiveness or impact on student achievement. The study also indicates that CMI has suffered from lack of linkages between the numerous reserach and development efforts in this area and the absence of national visibility.
