An evaluation: Intercultural use of community development methods

Abstract
This evaluation identifies changes in four rural Ecuadorian communities resulting from the efforts of Peace Corps volunteers. The volunteers were members of a nutrition program that used community development methods. The most significant impacts occurred when the volunteers used the nutrition components of their work to identify community felt needs. Despite little knowledge of community development, they used development methods to assist the communities in meeting these needs. These impacts, while incremental in nature, affected social relationships and major community institutions. These findings strongly suggest the usefulness of community development training for all village‐based Peace Corps volunteers. Finally, these findings suggest the community development profession must face the problem of programs that inappropriately label themselves as “community development.”
