Abstract
A 7-yr-old boy had had partial complex seizures from the age of 6. Two days after beginning a valproic acid [VPA] treatment in a daily dose of 55 mg/kg, disturbances of consciousness became obvious. He was admitted to hospital 2 days later. The EEG on admission showed bilateral .delta. activity. The plasma VPA level was 140 mg/l. Diazepam, 7 mg, was given i.v. The clinical state and the EEG returned to normal 4 min later. VPA may have a paradoxical epileptogenic effect in some types of epilepsy.
